Ecommerce category page SEO connects discoverable navigation with useful selection guidance. A category should tell people what belongs there, explain meaningful differences and link to relevant products. Technical access and decision support need separate checks: neither a polished grid nor one valid heading establishes the whole experience.

Start with the category's decision

Choose one category and one documented buying question. For an illustrative lighting category, that might be finding a lamp compatible with a specific space and installation. Record which properties determine suitability, who maintains them and what requires specialist advice. Avoid writing an introduction that repeats the category name without explaining a choice.

Put useful clarification beside the relevant comparison or filter. Explain the consequence of a specification, not merely its label. If a rule applies to only some products, state the exception. These are editorial recommendations to test with real selection tasks, not proven conversion improvements.

Audit navigation before adding more copy

Google recommends linking through category and subcategory pages to products, because navigation helps it understand site structure. It also explains that its crawler generally does not submit searches into a site's search box. A product available only through internal search therefore needs a discoverable link path. See Google's ecommerce navigation guidance.

Inspect the rendered category from a relevant parent page. Confirm that product links are real navigable links, that important products are reachable and that the page has a descriptive identity. Review title, main heading and selected canonical together. A crawler export can identify candidates; inspect examples before declaring a template-wide defect.

Check pagination and filter behavior separately

A shopper can reveal more products with a button while a crawler sees only the initial set. Google recommends unique URLs for paginated pages and links that crawlers can follow; it advises against canonicalizing every page in a sequence to page one. Its pagination documentation explains the implementation choices.

Record whether later product sets have accessible URLs and whether products remain discoverable without interaction. Then review filters separately: which combinations deserve a maintained landing page, which are merely temporary refinements, and how empty combinations behave. Do not open every filter permutation to indexing simply because it can generate a URL. Agree the intended indexable inventory before changing controls.

Preserve what the original observation proves

An August 2026 ARS report documented inspected collections without a rendered primary heading or detected collection-oriented markup, while product templates exposed structured product information. That is a bounded template observation from a private, anonymized report. It does not prove that every category lacked guidance, that a particular schema type was required, or that sales were lost.

The finding supports inspecting uneven template preparation. The audit extension here adds navigation, pagination and decision tasks; those checks were not all demonstrated by the original report. Collection markup is not a substitute for useful content, and product rich-result eligibility should not be assumed for a category grid.

Produce a repair list that can be verified

For each finding, retain the URL, observation date, test conditions, actual behavior, intended behavior and responsible owner. Separate inaccessible pages from reviewed pages. A failed fetch leaves content quality unknown.

Verify a repaired link or heading directly. Repeat the same selection task after a guidance change. Where Search Console and journey data are available, compare a defined page cohort and period, preserving other changes that could affect interpretation. More product clicks can reflect progress or extra effort; they do not alone establish a better decision.

Start with one category whose selection question matters. Deliver a discoverability map, a short list of missing explanations and a validation plan. This is a proposed audit method, not a market benchmark or a forecast of revenue.
